“What has kept me going all these years (over 40 years) are the students. They are the best—they make teaching worthwhile.”
--Pat McCarthy, Math Teacher
“The best part of my day is working in the classroom. It is a joy to discuss issues of the nation with tomorrow's leaders. It is exciting to be developing citizens who not only will lead our nation, but who also have a strong sense of service to those who need a hand up in society. Recently, a senior came to me and said, ‘Mrs. Smoot, I know what I want to do with my life. My family has always been involved in the area of science, and it was expected that that is what I would do. But, I told my parents that I want to be a government teacher like you, and they were okay with that.’ As a teacher I deliver information to students and hope that a portion of it will take. You never know what little spark will become a full blown fire. When a student lets you know this, getting up every morning is easy.”
--Linda Smoot, Social Studies Department Chair
“Brebeuf Jesuit offers a caring, safe, and nurturing environment which emphasizes the education of the whole child. We insist on academic excellence, emphasizing a young person's complete development to include lessons about spirituality, love, justice and values. Teachers at Brebeuf can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching!”
--Michelle Martin, Language Department Chair
“After years of working in public education, it was refreshing to come to a school that is oriented to a mission that goes beyond doing the minimum. The history of Jesuit education and its goal to create leaders with the skills and commitment to create a better world for everyone is motivation enough to get out of bed each day (and to refocus myself when I have a bad day).”
--JD Ferries-Rowe, Director of Information Technology
“I was new to Indianapolis when I started working at Brebeuf, and I am so happy to be here because it feels just like it did when I worked in my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin: great people working together to advance the future through our children. Whether you teach or are support staff, it is all for the same purpose. Our world will be a better place because of schools like Brebeuf Jesuit. The future leaders are here and that is what is great about this school.”

“I didn't decide to come to Brebeuf. In fact, I rejected the first opportunity. I had a good job at Bloomington North, loved my students there, and felt I was making a difference. Then I went home and thought about it. Ever since my conversion to Catholicism, I had said that when I retired from public school teaching, I would like to get a job in a parochial school. Here was a job staring me in the face not just at a parochial school, but at BREBEUF. Okay, I conceded; I will apply, but I won't pull strings; I won't do anything other than send in my resume. Two weeks later I got a phone call from Jana Haffley ’86. She explained she would be the new chair in English and wanted to talk with me. What I thought was coffee to catch up with each other, turned into a job interview. I should mention that Jana is a former student from a class in English Education at IU. The Jesuit question—‘Where is God in this?’—was all too easy for me to answer. God was clearly all over this decision; in fact, He seems to have made the decision for me. I just went along and tried not to get in the way of unfolding events. The next thing I knew was I being interviewed by Mr. Noga and within a week offered a position in the English Department (a department, by the way, which is the best I have ever been in). It felt like jumping on one of those people movers. I haven't stopped grinning since the ride started.”
