Brebeuf Jesuit junior Alia Martin has been named the 2015-2016 Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year!  Winners of this award are selected based on athletic achievement, high academic achievement, and personal character.

Alia’s performance on the field, including leading the Braves to a 22-2-1 record this past season and a state championship is mirrored in her work as a student at Brebeuf Jesuit.  Alia maintains a 4.0 GPA while being involved with Brebeuf’s Student Athletic Leadership Team and volunteering as a math tutor and youth soccer coach.

“At Brebeuf Jesuit, we call our students to discover and cultivate the fullness of their God-given talents as a responsibility and as an act of worship,” said Father Jack Dennis, S.J.  “Alia Martin lives the mission of Brebeuf Jesuit everyday, through her spirit, care for others and uplifting presence in our school.  Brebeuf Jesuit is blessed to have her for another year, allowing our school community to continue to be positively impacted through her work both on and off the field.”

“For a school to have a Gatorade state player of the year is an incredible honor.  To get two in a row, and have those two girls be sisters, is even more extraordinary.  Alia is a perfect example of what makes Brebeuf a great school, said Angela Berry-White, Brebeuf Girls Soccer Head Coach.  “She excels in a “team first” attitude that leads to success on the field; is exemplary in the classroom and finally, she gets involved in her community to try and make things better.  We are very proud of her.”

Alia has verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Michigan in the Fall of 2017.  Alia’s sister Reilly, is currently a freshman on the Women’s Soccer Team at the University of Michigan and also won the Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year last year, while a senior here at Brebeuf Jesuit.  This is the first time in Gatorade Indiana Girls Soccer Player of the Year history that sisters have won this prestigious honor in back-to-back years.

“Alia is the co-president-elect of the Student Athletic Leadership Team, which carries with it the added honor of being selected by her peers,” said Ted Hampton, Athletic Director.  “Alia is most deserving of this award and the honor it brings to the Brebeuf community and the Martin family.”
