Barcelona Exchange 2018 – April 2-16, 2018
This long-standing exchange program is an excellent opportunity for Brebeuf students to experience family life in a completely new culture! Students are immersed in the Spanish language, living with host families in Barcelona and attending school daily with their host student.
In addition to the host family experience, students will partake in many cultural excursions, among which is a full-day excursion to Manresa and Montserrat, two places with deep Jesuit roots. Students will also tour the world-renowned Gaudí masterpiece, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, other Gaudí architectural wonders, and many other sites that are particular to Barcelona and Catalonian culture.
One of the most important additions to our experience in Spain is an overnight excursion to the Basilica of Loyola in northern Spain. We visit the Basilica of Loyola and the family home and birthplace of St. Ignatius. This was rated by the Barcelona Exchange 2017 students as one of the most meaningful and reflective experiences that they had during their time in Spain.
Two Brebeuf faculty or staff members will accompany the students and will be available to the students during their stay. As a result of participating in the Barcelona Exchange Program, Brebeuf students gain confidence and proficiency in Spanish, and they deepen their understanding of other cultural practices and perspectives. They may even learn a bit of Catalán, the other official language of the region! The experience is unforgettable and truly gives students a taste of the world beyond the doors of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.
Based on last year’s final costs, the participation cost for the Barcelona Exchange 2018 is $3,500. As costs are expected to rise in 2018, thus is imperative that we make the airfare and tour bookings prior to the end of the fiscal year to lock in the best fares and prices. The total budget covers airfare, excursions, tours, and any associated transportation and travel expenses including restaurant meals while on the excursions, and chaperone expenses. Chaperones remain in Barcelona with the students during the course of the two-week stay.
Students who are accepted into the program will be notified by Sunday, November 5, 2017.
For students and families who accept the offer of participation, a non-refundable deposit of $1,500 will be due on or before Monday, November 13, 2017.
The remaining balance is split evenly. $1,000 is due on or before Monday, December 11, 2017 and the final fee of $1,000 is due on or before Monday, January 15, 2018.

Application and Cover Letter for Barcelona Exchange Trip
In order to participate in the Barcelona Exchange 2018 program, a student must be currently enrolled in Spanish level III, has reached this level in a prior year, or have special permission from the director, Karen Beck, Program Director, and the Brebeuf Administrative team. The student must be currently in good academic and behavioral standing as indicated by the Deans’ Office, Principal’s Office, Academic Counseling and current faculty members. The student must have a valid U.S. Passport that will not expire for six months upon the return of the student to the United States. Other required documents will be sent to families following acceptance to the program. Finally, the student must plan to attend ALL pre-trip meetings. The preparation for this exchange program is extremely important, and each participant must be aware of particular information and general expectations prior to departure.
Please be aware that there are various components to the application process:
- General student and parent/guardian data as indicated on the application
- Student questionnaire
- Student essay
- Parent essay
- Two general faculty/counselor recommendations
- One current (or former) language teacher recommendation
Students should distribute their faculty recommendation forms no later than Friday, October 6, 2017.
The application for the Barcelona Exchange 2018 program is to be completed and returned to Sra. Beck in the World Languages Department by Monday, October 23, 2017.
Students selected for the exchange program will be notified by Sunday, November 5, 2017.
