Celebrating Philanthropy with Jennifer Simmons & Michael McBride ‘01

Please tell us a little about yourself.

“After Brebeuf Jesuit I attended Miami University, majoring in Marketing and Management Systems, and soon after studied at the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University in Bloomington.  I worked in Bloomington for 5 years before joining Cohen and Malad, LLP in Indianapolis.  It was an extremely positive decision which allowed me to become more engaged with my community and alma mater.  I felt called to do more for Brebeuf and appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the Brebeuf Alumni Association.  I was a part of the Alumni Board for 6 years, serving as President for much of that time.  Learning where the school is currently and how it is continually evolving to continue its mission has been incredibly rewarding.  I take great pride in my alma mater and like seeing how they have maintained the core values and the same elite educational experience for nearly 60 years.”

What do you wish others knew about Brebeuf?

“What impresses me most about Brebeuf is the educational setting, the incredible social development that is prevalent, and the opportunity for practiced independence.  You learn early on how to be appropriately responsible and manage your time for success.  There is an atmosphere of acceptance for individual personalities that is very unique to Brebeuf too.  When issues arise, the classes and the school bands together in support of each other.  Those friendships and experiences carried over for me.  I value that community feel, and appreciate knowing that every student is able and encouraged to grow into their unique image.”

Why do you give to Brebeuf?

“I became more involved because I wanted to give back to current students.  Brebeuf was such a big part of my life and I wanted to support and encourage those same opportunities for others.  I wanted to give back in a way that not only supports students, but faculty and staff.

When I was a student, I helped work the annual Braves Open golf outing.  Members of the boys golf team carried bags and networked with alumni.  That was definitely one of the events I was eager to be a part of! I have really enjoyed being able to help lead and support the outing, to engage fellow alumni families and parents, and make a positive impact each year for our students and community.

It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of our everydays.  Alumni, I would encourage you to take a step back and focus on what Brebeuf has meant to you, to focus on the importance of how impactful that time was, to remember everything that was given to us and give back.”
