Lights on for Justice – Friday, June 19
On Friday, June 19, Brebeuf Jesuit will take part in “Lights for Justice”. All across Marion County, the lights of high school stadiums will burn bright for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, as a memorial to George Floyd and to spotlight the need for continued social justice and the fight against racism. Mr. Floyd was born on October 14, therefore the memorial will begin at 10:14pm. Furthermore, June 19 is also known as Juneteenth and holds special significance within the Black community. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day commemorates June 19, 1865, when a Union general read federal papers in Galveston, Texas that stated all previously enslaved people in Texas were free. This was the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved Blacks in America. Please join us in reflecting on, not only the symbolism of this moment, but also the action steps that are necessary to achieve true justice and equality in our community, nation, and world.
