Solar Eclipse Plans – Monday, August 21

The solar eclipse occurring on Monday, August 21 will be a significant and memorable event throughout its viewing path. Brebeuf Jesuit is going to take advantage of this educational opportunity.

The moon will begin its path in front of the sun at 12:57 p.m., right after the beginning of period 5. It will continue to its maximum coverage point, which occurs at 2:24 p.m., then will end at 3:48 p.m. Click here to see an animation display of how the eclipse will look in Indianapolis.

Brebeuf’s Science Department will be providing a school-wide opportunity for students, faculty & staff to view the eclipse during the 1:35 p.m. PRT, on the football field & bleachers. The Science Department has purchased 250 eclipse viewers which provide for safe viewing that can be shared if needed. The PRT will be extended until 2:35 p.m. in order to allow for all of the students to view the eclipse at its maximum point if they wish.

The afternoon schedule for Monday, August 21 will be:

Period 5 – 12:55-1:35 p.m.
PRT – 1:35-2:35 p.m.
Period 8 – 2:35-3:20 p.m.

VIEWING THE ECLIPSE SAFELY

In order to ensure our students can experience this opportunity safely, Brebeuf will be emphasizing to students the importance of not looking directly at the sun, including during the eclipse, without the aid of specialized solar filters or viewers.

Due to the timing of the eclipse during and after the school day, it is not possible to monitor their viewing all students throughout the time of the eclipse, so we will be educating and reminding them about safe methods of viewing.

Parents and students are encouraged to read the information provided in the link below.  The information included in this link has full details regarding safety precautions and other eclipse information.
