In June, Brebeuf Jesuit senior Semira Killebrew was named the 2017-2018 Gatorade Indiana Track & Field Player of the Year! Winners of this award are selected based on athletic achievement, high academic achievement, and personal character.
Semira’s performance on the track, including leading the Braves to an IHSAA state runner-up finish, is mirrored in her work as a student-athlete at Brebeuf Jesuit, as well as her commitment to serving in the Indianapolis community. As a runner, Semira’s drive to being the best begins with her perseverance and determination in practice and throughout the off-season. She is always looking for ways to improve and gain an edge on the competition. Semira works hard each and every day, whether it involves core work on easy training days, dynamic drills before and after practice or her ability to dig deeper during the toughest workouts. She has defined what it takes to be a champion.
The Brebeuf Jesuit Track & Field team’s success at the IHSAA State Championship over the past several years, including third place in 2017 and second in 2018, can be traced directly to Semira and her ability to get the most out of herself, as well as her teammates. As a small school competing against others with nearly five times the number of students, this level of achievement is no small feat. In the 2018 state finals, Semira won the 100m dash (running an 11.55), delivered an incredible comeback to win the 400m relay (46.87) and finished 4th in the 200m dash.
We are so proud of the work Semira has put in on and off the track, and we hope you will join us in celebrating this incredible accomplishment at the upcoming varsity boys basketball game against Cathedral on Saturday, December 1, where Semira will be recognized for this prestigious award. Tip off is at 7:30 p.m.
