Student Spotlight – Miles McIlwain ’18
Loves About Brebeuf
The opportunity to grow as a whole person. You naturally become a more organized and responsible student with the amount of free time Brebeuf’s schedule allows. Spiritually, numerous retreats and reflections have personally helped me grow in my faith. Every current or former Brebeuf student I know has certainly been positively impacted by such an amazing, loving community.
Freshman year, my favorite class was Spanish with Señora Jackman. I’ve also recently enjoyed AP Psychology with Mr. Petty and AP Environmental Science with Mr. Miller last year.
I plan on studying Business with a focus on marketing or finance. It is possible that I continue my athletic career in college, but I’ve also applied to nine different schools. I have no idea where I will end up at the moment.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
National Honors Society
I was born in Columbus, Ohio, so my family and I have always been huge Ohio State fans.
I come from New Augusta Public Academy.
My parents became vegetarians this year (No, I’m not).
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
Currently it’s Stranger Things. I just finished the series a couple days ago. My all-time favorites would definitely be The Office and Narcos.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I would 100% travel to Tokyo. Something about the innovativeness and unique culture of the city has always attracted me.
Aside from being done with finals, what are you most looking forward to over Christmas Break?
I’m looking forward to relaxing and spending time with my family. Christmas is my favorite holiday, especially because I will continue my tradition of watching Elf and The Polar Express throughout the entire month. In addition, I look forward to hearing back from most of the schools to which i have applied.
Being a part of the football team during its run to the State Championship was…
One of the best experiences of my life. Our team was viewed as underdogs much of the year, which made making it to Lucas Oil that much more special. All of the hard work our senior class has put in over the past few years finally paid off. There were countless highlights our team made this season, but what I know I’ll most remember is the special bond I’ve made with every person in the program.
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
Don’t be afraid to take advantage of every opportunity that interests you. Join a club, play a sport, go on a retreat. If I had a chance to start over, I would certainly take advantage of a service, exchange, or study trip. I have friends who always tell me about the great work they’ve done in Belize, or how much they’ve learned from staying in Spain. Brebeuf has endless opportunities to gain new experiences that will last you a lifetime.
