Summer College Application Essay Seminar
Three Options This Summer
During the summer prior to senior year, students are encouraged to take this writing course for the purpose of creating a comprehensive essay portfolio to be used for college application essays, supplemental essays, and/or scholarship essays. Students complete a variety of essay types including personal statements, “I am a person who…,” extraordinary life experience (including community service, travel, demonstration of leadership, extra-curricular activities), response to a pertinent quote, choice of meaningful novel, response to a piece of non-fiction or film, etc.
As a springboard to their writing, students receive all the newly revised topics found in the Common Application which is used by a sizable number of colleges and universities across the country. Students are strongly encouraged to research any specific essay questions or supplement questions provided by the colleges to which they intend to apply prior to beginning the class. Typically, colleges can take down their application sites over the summer where those prompts are located.
Students compose, work with peers, and discuss their progress and feedback daily; they also revise and edit under the guidance of Ms. Brown. Students receive as much individual instruction pertaining to peer review, style, voice, flow, and tone as the time allows. As an additional component or benefit, students who participate in the class are welcome to submit additional essays to Ms. Brown as the school year commences.
